Dental Crown—Is it Right for You?

I’m Dr. Leon J Witkowski, Jr DDS and my son and I practice general and cosmetic dentistry in Mokena, IL but we also serve the Frankfort IL, New Lenox, Orland Park and Tinley Park communities.

There are a lot of reasons why you might want a dental crown. When the tooth is severely damaged, discolored or misshapen, crowns can be placed over it to effectively hide the ugly look. When the tooth has been weakened by heavy fillings, a crown can be counted upon to strengthen it. So there are functional uses for crowns on top of its aesthetic purposes.

The procedure requires two visits to the dentist. On the first visit, the tooth will be prepared for the crown. The damaged part will be cleaned, some tooth enamel will need to be removed so that the crown will fit and an impression will be taken of your teeth. This impression will then be sent to the lab to have your crown made by the technician. Then, you will be given a temporary crown while you wait for your second appointment. On your second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be fitted on top of the damaged tooth and cemented. The damaged tooth is then restored to its functional state.

You have the option of having porcelain, metal alloy or a combination of both for a dental crown. So far, porcelain is the most popular because it has the most natural appearance. Metal alloy is the most durable but you can have a combination of the two to get the best of both worlds. When you combine both materials, you get the natural appearance of porcelain and the durability of metal alloy.

When you need a dental crown to repair damaged teeth, your bill will normally be paid by your insurance company. But when you have it for aesthetic purposes, it would usually come as an out-of-pocket expense.
